Exploring the fungal communities of America’s fungus-feeding millipedes
Kasson M. Exploring the fungal communities of America’s fungus-feeding millipedes. Research Permit and Reporting System
>250 million years ago, one group of millipedes (Colobognatha) began to feed exclusively on fungi. In the U.S. alone, the fungal communities of 97% of known fungus-feeding millipede species have never been studied. 12 (36%) of these species are endemic to CA, found nowhere else in the world, emphasizing the importance of millipede sampling in this state. By examining fungal associations in this largely overlooked group of animals, we aim to explore the role fungi play in millipede success.
