Surveys for two rare tiger beetles were initiated in 1985 and continued each year from 2001 through 2017 by Dr. C. Barry Knisley from Randolph-Macon College. NPS staff at ASIS who received training from Dr. Knisley continued surveys from 2018 - 2022. The survey objectives since the onset of monitoring were to: 1) determine the distribution and abundance of adults of C. dorsalis media and C. lepida at ASIS, 2) evaluate population trends and distribution patterns of these species compared to previous years, and 3) determine changes along the shoreline that might explain the trends in distribution and abundance.
