The Hidden Hill Mine is located in the south-central portion of Mojave National Preserve. Gold ore was discovered at the Hidden Hill Mine in 1882, with production starting in 1889. In 1914, a rich gold deposit was discovered at the mine; however, production decreased shortly thereafter and didn’t recover until the 1950s. Remaining features include 69 waste rock piles, 53 prospects, 24 structures, 10 adits, 10 inclines, five pieces of equipment, four buildings, three shafts, two stopes, and one well. Of these features, only the remains of the Golden Queen mill and associated tailings, adits, shaft, stope, machine mounts, prospect pits, and explosives lockers, as well as the remains of buildings and structures and artifacts associated with the Hidden Hill mining camp were documented at the request of the Preserve’s cultural resources staff. Pursuant to Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), this DOE includes a description of the physical setting of the mining property; a historic context that includes a discussion of the developmental history of the property and its associated mining district, as well as a summary of historical mining activities occurring within the east Mojave; detailed descriptions of all documented features; and a summary of findings and recommendations for eligibility to the NRHP.
