What's New in the NPS DataStore Release 2.8

Patch 2.8 is scheduled to be released on January 20th and will feature several enhancement and bug fixes. Among the most impactful will be a change that will prevent reference owners from deleting files that have been set to public and been activated. We realize this is a change, but we are plugging a hole where public-facing files could suddenly vanish. The suggested (and transparent) way to replace a file is through the versioning process. When versioning is used, users with old links see a banner directing them to the latest version, search results only show the latest version, and the full version history is available for review. In the rare case where a file does need to be removed, get in touch with irma@nps.gov and an administrator can assist in documenting the retraction. Leave no trace is recommended for hiking or camping, but it’s far from ideal for digital files! Thanks for being patient with us as this new feature rolls out. The result will be a useful increase in transparency for current and future DataStore users, and improve scientific robustness and repeatability in analyses. Other updates include: • Enhancements to the profile page to emphasize the title, deemphasize the reference type, and ensure that reference details are open by default (they were previously collapsed). • The ability to upload more than one digital file at once. • The ability to select and download digital files as a compressed, zip file. • A new ‘Date Range’ search within Advanced Search. • A new ‘Data Package’ reference type that will be used to encourage more open data/open science compatible publication – more to come in future releases!
