The Cultural Landscape Inventory of the Civil War Defenses of Washington, D.C. documents the overall cultural landscape consisting of the fortifications, supporting defense works, and associated features that formed an integral unit for defending the city. The inventory of the Civil War Defenses consists of a site history narrative, analysis and evaluation, and inventory form that provides pertinent information in a standardized format, which can be put into a database, along with an appendix. Subsequent to the completion of the overall inventory, it was recommended that a cultural landscape report examine each individual fort and battery that makes up the Civil War Defenses. The Civil War Defenses of Washington were on the National Register prior to the establishment of the cultural landscape inventory program. However, the information in this inventory is still critical and provides the baseline data to develop management guidelines.
