Herpetological Inventory at Colonial National Historic Park

This report contains the results of analyses conducted on herpetological inventory data collected at Colonial National Historical Park between 2015-2017. Hurricane Sandy, which struck the Northeast Atlantic Coast in October 2012, significantly changed the physical and vegetative structure of the coastal landscape in some of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network parks. Significant efforts were undertaken to understand the impacts of the storm on plant and animal populations and their distributions. Previous inventories of Colonial NHP have documented diversity and, in some cases, abundances of amphibians and reptiles occurring within the NPS unit. Such studies are necessary to meet the goals of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network for regular inventories to guide NPS stewardship of these lands and to aid in planning and decision-making. A previous inventory of Colonial NHP was completed in 2003, and updated inventories such as this can be used to assess the impacts of Hurricane Sandy on amphibian and reptile populations.
