Located in Klamath County in southwestern Oregon, Mazama Campground lies approximately 180 miles south of Portland and 50 miles northeast of Medford, Oregon, in the southern portion of Crater Lake National Park. The campground was constructed between 1956 and 1966 and constituted a major element of Mission 66 programming in the park. The project had a significant impact on visitor use patterns, as it drew a considerable number of overnight guests away from Rim Campground and Crater Lake Lodge at Rim Village to the less-developed area near Annie Spring, in the south-central portion of the park. Upon the conclusion of Mission 66 and its follow-up program, Parkscape USA, Mazama Campground included 190 campsites organized around seven loop roads, seven wood-framed comfort stations, an amphitheater for interpretive programs, a registration kiosk, and a telephone booth, as well as various campsite furniture. As detailed in the following sections, the general configuration of the campground, including its circulation network and campsite organization, the amphitheater, and one of the campground’s Mission 66-era comfort stations retain a high level of integrity to this period. Mazama Campground has been determined eligible for listing on the NRHP, locally significant under Criteria A and C with a period of significance of 1956-1969 CE.
