Located in Clallam County in northwestern Washington State, Heart O’ the Hills Developed Area lies approximately 8 miles south of Port Angeles, Washington, and 75 miles northwest of Seattle in the northern portion of Olympic National Park. Olympic National Park comprises 1,442 square miles and occupies the heart of the Olympic Peninsula, as well as 73 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline. The park encompasses four regions that vary broadly in climate and topography, including the alpine areas near the center of the park, the rugged Pacific coastline and temperate rainforest of the west side, and the drier forests of the east. Heart O’ the Hills Developed Area is situated in the forested mountain foothills approximately 12 miles north of Hurricane Ridge. Heart O’ the Hills Developed Area is a good example of National Park Service Mission 66 development and is one of the more intact examples of a Mission 66 developed area in Olympic National Park. Constructed between 1958 and 1963, Heart O’ the Hills contains elements of a Mission 66 developed area including employee housing, an entrance station, a campground, and an amphitheater with associated visitor parking.
