Historical Handbook No. 16 discusses the early attempts by Great Britain to colonize the US mid-Atlantic coastal areas in what was then Virginia, the establishment of the Roanoke Island colonies by Walter Raleigh, and the mystery of the Lost Colony as well as later historical information. The last part of the handbook serves as a guidebook to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. This publication is one of a series of handbooks describing the historical and archeological areas in the National Park System administered by the National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior.
