The Indian Cove Campground measures approximately 4,433 feet (1,351 m) north-south by 9,651 feet (2,941 m) east-west and encompasses 300.10 acres of NPS-administered land in the northeastern portion of the Park. It is located within portions of Sections 8, 9, and 16, Township 1 South (T1S), Range 8 East (R8E), San Bernardino Prime Meridian (PM).Archival research suggests that the Indian Cove Campground was being used by monument guests for camping and picnicking as early as 1941; however, picnic tables and “campstoves” were not added until 1950 (Greene 1983). In 1958, the property was described as having 10 campsites. The following year, four group sites were added southeast of the campground near Rattlesnake Canyon, and between 1966 and 1967, an additional 12 group sites were added, and 100 picnic tables and fireplaces were installed. Currently, the campground contains 101 individual campsites and 13 group campsites. Associated amenities currently present at the campground include picnic tables, pedestal grills, fire rings, vault toilets, signage, parking areas, an amphitheater, and trash and recycling facilities. The Indian Cove Campground is eligible for listing in the NRHP under Criterion A, at the local level of significance, for its association with the Mission 66 program, and the development of recreational and educational opportunities in the Park. The site generally retains integrity of location, design, setting, feeling, and association as defined by the NRHP.
