Zion National Park FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data

Firmage D and Ronsani KG. 2023. Zion National Park FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data. National Park Service

Fire effects monitoring data collected at Zion National Park in Southern Utah. The data were collected during the spring, summer and fall field seasons by the fire effects monitoring crew out of Zion National Park from 1995-2022. Three types of plot monitoring protocols are represented in this database--NPS Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH, 2003) permanent plots, Composite Burn Index (CBI) non-permanent plots and modified FMH project-level circular plots. Data collected from 50 x 20 m FMH forest plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling tree density, shrub density, and herbaceous species cover and richness measured via 50 meter point intercept transects. In addition, post-fire assessments are conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from eight locations in the plot to document change. Data collected from 30 m FMH shrub plots include point intercept data to obtain percent cover and richness. Shrub density data is also measured using brush belts along the same transect. Photographs are taken from each end of the transect to document change. Data collected from 30 meter modified FMH circular forest plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling tree density, shrub density and GAP intercept, and herbaceous species cover and richness measured via (2) 25 meter point intercept transects. In addition, post-fire assessments are conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from eight locations in the plot to document change. Data also includes CBI data for several prescribed fires and one wildfire within Zion National Park.
