Fish monitoring by the NMDGF was conducted in 1992, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2014. Since the last NMDGF survey in 2015, it is likely that the abundance of native and non-native fish populations has changed considerably since the 2013 and 2014 surveys which documented an almost complete loss of the non-native trout population and a concomitant increase of native fish abundance (NMDGF 2013, 2015). Fish monitoring by NPS and NMDGF has been conducted in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The primary objective of this Project and continuing surveys is to assess the status of both the native and non-native fish populations within PECO, at three long-term monitoring sites on the Pecos River, and at three perennial habitats on Glorieta Creek, a small tributary of the Pecos River, within Pecos National Historical Park, New Mexico. The information is needed to; 1. Characterize the status of the native fish community, specifically the Rio Grande chub population; 2. Document the increase of the non-native, brown trout population subsequent to the 2013 Tres Lagunas Fire 3. Better understand the relationships between native and non-native fish abundance, specifically the impact of predation and competition from non-native brown trout on the distribution and abundance of native fish, specifically the sensitive Rio Grande chub.
