This publication contains the notes and correspondence exchanged between Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Pierre L'Enfant, James Hoban, Andrew Ellicott, Stephen Hallett, William Thornton, Benjamin Latrobe, the Commissioners, and others, relating to the founding, surveying, planning, designing, constructing, and administering of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia (1783-1818). The publication also contains plans, illustrations, maps, budget figures and expenses, bibliography, appendix with biographical and placename data, and a list of the principal people in charge of the Capitol (with salaries and duties) from 1793-1850. No 4. in the Source Book Series, which focused on contemporary narratives and letters of historical importance.
