Popular Study Series No. 1. Two articles printed together as one handbook. The first article, by Elbert Cox Superintendent of Morristown National Historical Park, discusses the Continental Army's winter encampments in Morristown, New Jersey during the winters of 1777 and 1779-1780. The second article, by Russell Baker Junior Historian Morristown National Historical Park, uses primary source letters to illustrate what Christmas celebrations were like for soldiers encamped at Morristown during the winter of 1777. The Popular Study Series began in 1938 as articles published in the National Park Service's Region One (Eastern) newsletter, The Regional Review. The newsletters contained a collection of historical and scientific research articles written by experts in their fields. The quality of these articles resulted in repeated requests for reprints. The National Park Service reprinted select articles in 1941 as the Popular Study Series.
