Source Book Series No. 2. This handbook brings together some of the more important and significant passages of Abraham Lincoln's letters, speeches, and state documents, together with firsthand observations and appraisals by his contemporaries. The accompanying illustrations are intended to supplement and illuminate the text and are themselves contemporary historical documents. The handbook begins with an autobiography of Lincoln written by himself in response to request and ends after his assassination in 1865. The National Park Service Source Book Series was a short series published in the 1940s and 1950s which focused on very specific histories, narratives, and letters of historical importance.
