Archaeological Inventory and Assessment at Lake Matcharak, Gates of the Arctic National Park. Results from the 2019 Field Season

From June 25 to July 4, 2019, a crew of three National Park Service archaeologists conducted intensive evaluation and testing of archaeological sites at Lake Matcharak in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The project aimed to collect data for Determinations of Eligibility of previously recorded sites for the National Register of Historic Places and to identify new sites in unsurveyed areas in the vicinity. Over the course of eight days, the crew tested nine previously recorded sites and recorded four new sites within 2.6 km of a base camp established near AMR- 00196, the Matcharak Peninsula Site. Most of the sites are subsurface lithic and faunal scatters, with a few sparse surface artifact scatters located on eroding slopes. The integrity of the sites visited were determined to range from good to poor condition, with the majority being affected by bioturbation and erosion. This report summarizes the results from the 2019 field season in Gates of the Arctic National Park and provides recommendations for future work at Lake Matcharak.
