The Heartland I&M Network (HTLN) conducted routine monitoring of the woodlands at Homestead National Historical Park (HOME) in 2022. We observed an increase in the volume (basal area) of standing dead trees in the bur oak site, but there was no change in the volume of standing dead trees in the successional forest sites. We are uncertain of the reason for this pattern because we cannot rule out sampling error. Two large bur oak trees were included among the standing dead trees in 2022. A large silver maple and a few small hackberry trees were also recently classified as dead. Live trees did not seem to be correlated with the increase in dead trees in the bur oak community, however. In fact, live trees are growing larger, but not recruiting stems to the midstory and overstory forest layers.
