Diving in the National Park System: An Administrative History
Farabee CR, Lenihan DJ, Submerged Resources Center, National Park Service. 2019. Diving in the National Park System: An Administrative History. National Park Service. Lakewood, Colorado
A history of the National Park Service's dive program from its early beginnings with a primary focus on search and rescue to its current expanded mission. Today's dive program continues its original search and rescue operations in and outside of national parks but also works to further natural and cultural resource research, management, interpretation, and preservation. The publication looks at the early beginnings of the dive program, its development as a search and rescue tool, its early adoption of SCUBA technology, its location and documentation of submerged cultural resources, and its scientific studies of underwater organisms and ecosystems. Using in depth research and first-person interviews, the publication looks at how the dive program has changed over the course of more than 100 years as it expanded its mission to meet the needs of an ever-growing national park system.
