Determine causes of coastal bird breeding declines on the Boston Harbor Islands

Parsons KC, Schmidt SR, Howard B, Brennan L. Determine causes of coastal bird breeding declines on the Boston Harbor Islands. Research Permit and Reporting System

The Boston Harbor Islands provide habitat for significant numbers of breeding, wintering and migrating coastal waterbirds. In particular, long-legged wading bird populations in the harbor have anchored state-wide and regional populations. However, abundance of these species declined significantly over the past three decades and their persistence locally and regionally is in jeopardy. This study investigated current status and limiting factors, and provided management recommendations.
