In 1994 the National Park Service Maritime Initiative (know the National Maritime Heritage Program) published an inventory of the historic light stations in the United States. The Inventory of Historic Light Stations contained 611 existing historic light stations (as of 1994) encompassing 631 existing historic towers. In order to be included in the Inventory a light station had to be 50 or more years old (as of 1994) and have been evaluated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The inventory includes both publicly owned and privately owned light stations and contains comprehensive data on each light station to include: Location, Dates, Existing Historic Tower, Modern Tower, Fog Signal Building, Keepers Quarters, Other Structures, Ownership, Current Use, Significance/Evaluation, Miscellaneous. - Definition of Light Station used for the 1994 Inventory of Historic Light Stations - A light station generally consisted of a complex of mutually supporting structures. The light required fuel and maintenance that could only be provided by keepers. Keepers in turn required housing and transportation; hence a station might include a fireproof oil house, a keeper's dwelling, a cistern, and perhaps a boathouse, stable, or garage, in addition to the tower. If a fog signal was required, a separate structure might be built to house it as well. At the very least a station would have a tower supporting an optic and housing for the keeper; in many instances, one structure would serve both functions.
