2011 Use of Selected Trails and Parking Areas on the Going-To-The-Sun Road: Interim Report

Bedoya DM and Freimund W. 2012. 2011 Use of Selected Trails and Parking Areas on the Going-To-The-Sun Road: Interim Report. Department of Society and Conservation, University of Montana. Missoula MT

This project continues a long term study of visitor behavior on the Goint-to-the-Sund Road (GTTSR) starting in 2005. The present study pursued three main objectives. First, assessing parking lot use through observations at Avalanche and Sunrift Gorge parking lots. Second, monitoring trail use via GPS at the St. Mary and Hidden lake Trailheads. Finally, estimation of trail use at eight locations along the corridor. Thus, the research was designed to provide a baseline of information that will allow park managers to plan improvements associated with reconstruction and mitigate unforeseen impacts to visitor experiences, park values, and key biophysical attributes.
