This document is an initial planning document for the City of Newton and City of North Newton, KS (CLG) to build resilience for historic properties in those communities during times of disaster events. The document addressing preparing properties for natural disasters, outlines recovery resource and mitigation options, and offers recommendations for continued steps. From the Introduction: "The most important component of disaster planning is prevention. The adage and [sic] 'Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' is integral to disaster preparation and response. This is especially true when considering historic buildings, districts, and landmarks. This document is to serve as the initial planning document to strengthen the core areas of the city and build resilience for difficult and challenging events. It will include the following: A plan of how to prepare the local historic resources for natural disasters Outlining recovery plans once and [sic] event has occurred Mitigation efforts that can assist in reducing damage Further recommendations for preparation are laid out in the final section. These include: Creation of a Preservation Plan Securing the preservation and retention of Harvey County Archives Updated in-depth survey of North Newton (including areas from 1970 as they are now eligible) Updated in-depth survey of Newton (including areas from 1970 as they are now eligible) Ensuring historic properties/districts are in the Hazard Mitigation Plan Ensure that KHRI records contain multiple historic photos and any other pertinent information As an addendum there is a resource page for property owners/homeowners/residents for resources on preparation and recovery." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Kansas State Historical Society, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P20AF00021).
