This report documents current physical conditions at the Marshall County Historic Courthouse in Marysville, KS, outlines treatment recommendations with cost estimates, and provides a general history of the property. From the Introduction: "Purpose This Historic Structure Report is intended to provide the Marshall County Historical Society with a guide for the future rehabilitation and maintenance of the Marshall County Historic Courthouse. This report includes: - A narrative history of the building, including social history and context - Period of significance - A chronology of construction - An architectural evaluation, including exterior and interior building descriptions and conditions - Exterior, site, and room-by-room treatment guidelines, following the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation - Historical drawings and photos - Plans showing historical development of the building - Plans showing levels of significance and integrity Methodology MCHS staff and volunteers conducted that historical research beginning with the fire that destroyed the previous courthouse December 30, 1890. Research Assistant Kay Nester and volunteers Beth Skinner, Luann Kongs and Sharon Vogelsberg researched the history of the Historic Courthouse and the involvement of the historical society with the building. Sources for information were local newspapers, MCHS Board minutes, newsletters, and other documents. Photographs were selected from the society's collection. The focus was on activities such as repairs, painting projects, and changes to the interior or exterior of the building. Also included were significance events that happened in or around the courthouse. A chronology of these activities and events was written, along with a historical narrative about the building. TreanorHL, Bob D. Campbell, Latimer Sommers, and Terracon staff visited the Marshall County Historic Courthouse in January and February of 2021 in preparation for this report. Staff included Joy Coleman, preservation architect, Janet Getz, preservation architect, Richard Crabtree, structural engineer, and Paul Fowler, asbestos and lead group leaders. During the visits, staff conducted a room-by-room survey, recording all features on project specific forms, taking photos, readings, and samples. The exterior was similarly surveyed, with features and conditions annotated on survey sheets. The assessment staff primarily evaluated the exterior conditions from the ground, using a drone to grather images and video of the roof, gutters, flashings, and rooftop features."
