This Historic Structure Report (HSR) concerns the light station at Point Au Sable, an important historical feature within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore that showcases an era of early Great Lakes shipping and navigation, and the subsequent impact of technology on both. The Au Sable Light Station (originally called the Big Sable Light Station) was established in 1873 to guide ships along the southern coast of Lake Superior. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 1978. The following structures are addressed: Keeper's Dwelling (HS-09), Light Tower (HS-10), Double Keepers' Duplex Residence (HS-11), Fog Signal Building (HS-16), Metal Oil House (HS-12), Brick Oil House (HS-13), Brick Privy #1 (HS-14), Brick Privy #2 (HS-15), Boathouse (HS-17), and Garage (HS-09a). It includes historical background on the structures, building and site chronology from 1873 to 2000, existing conditions, design and research recommendations, and preliminary cost estimates for treatments.
