This field guide is intended as an aid to incident responders responsible for handling ships with high-risk ballast water that may be laden with potentially harmful non-indigenous species and pathogens collectively referred to as aquatic invasive species (AIS). The methods presented were developed in coordination with the US Geological Survey (USGS) and trialed aboard a Great Lakes bulk carrier (Reference 11). High risk carriers may wish to utilize these novel intervention methods at sea before arrival, upon arrival in port, or at an incident location, such as a grounding site. The decision process outlined in this guide can assist responders in balancing practical field considerations with sound environmental practice in emergency situations; for example, upon prediction of bad weather threatening to break a ship’s hull.
