The purpose of the Historic Structure Report (HSR) for the Great Falls Park Visitor Center is to guide the preservation, rehabilitation, and repairs of the structure, and to serve as a preservation tool for potential future changes to the building program. This report provides documentary, graphic, and physical information about the building’s history and existing conditions. This Historic Structure Report examines the history of use at Great Falls and focuses on the design and construction of the Great Falls Park Visitor Center. This study does not examine the history of segregation at the site. Going forward, the George Washington Memorial Parkway will undertake a study to examine how the building and site were used by diverse communities, and how the site and building may have facilitated or supported exclusionary practices and uses. The National Register of Historic Places Nomination for the Great Falls Park Historic District considers the Visitor Center a contributing building. The National Register of Historic Places Nomination, completed in 2014, determined that the Visitor Center retains integrity to the period of significance, despite minor alterations and accessibility modifications.
