The Anthropological Studies Center, at Sonoma State University, California in collaboration with the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation (TDN) and Elk Valley Rancheria (EVR), prepared this study, Climate-Change Threats to Traditional Tolowa Marine, Terrestrial, and Cultural Resources and Recommendations for Management, Cushing and Nickel Creek Watersheds, Redwood National Park, California, under NPS Task Agreement Purchase Order P12PX16907 of Cooperative Agreement H8537070194. The study is an assessment of potential threats posed by climate change to Tolowa archaeological, ethnobotanical, and cultural resources in the Cushing and Nickel Creek watersheds, and recommendations for management in response to the threats, including restorative habitat management and archaeological research in support of long-term ecological and cultural resource management. The report provides an overview of the natural environment and traditional cultural ecology of the Cushing and Nickel Creek watersheds, combining Tribal ecological knowledge (TEK) and Western ecological knowledge (WEK). Tables summarize the rich and varied traditional uses of local flora and fauna gleaned from ethnographic, oral history, and archaeological records. Both the TDN and EVR have collected oral histories regarding local water quality and the health of local fisheries, terrestrial plants, and animal life. These data are incorporated into the tables and text of the report, and the complete interviews are appended. The tribes have prioritized the species that they feel should be emphasized in restorative habitat management, and this report combines those recommendations with those of local land-management agencies and advisory consortia in cases where they overlap.
