This Historic Structures Report (HSR) identifies characteristics and features that convey the historic significance and character of two buildings on Sand Island within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The report describes historical background and context of the West Bay Club, documents building development, evaluates current conditions, and provides treatment for rehabilitation based on anticipated future use. The condition assessment for each element/feature is documented in Part I. Recommendations for treatment are provided in Part II. The recommended treatment for the West Bay Club Lodge is rehabilitation, addressing critical structural work, modification for code, and accommodation for visitor use and access. The HSR recommends documentation and removal of the Icehouse, as stabilization or rehabilitation efforts would further destabilize the eroding hillside. The two buildings addressed in the HSR are part of the West Bay Club area of Sand Island, part of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The West Bay Club is associated with the evolution of outdoor recreation and leisure travel to self-owned summer homes, fishing camps, and hunting lodges in Wisconsin. Constructed in 1912–13 by the architectural firm of Buechner and Orth, design of the West Bay Club Lodge was likely influenced by the rustic architecture style that emerged from the resort architecture of the Adirondack region of northern New York state in the 1870s.
