This property is the subject of a pending National Historic Landmark nomination. The March 2022 draft of the National Historic Landmark nomination for the Blue Ridge Parkway will be considered by the Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) at its meeting on May 14-15, 2024. The Landmarks Committee will evaluate whether to advise the NPSAB to recommend that the Secretary of the Interior proceed with designation. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Blue Ridge Parkway in multiple counties, Virginia and North Carolina documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 (Criterion Exception 8) as the premier long-distance, scenic national parkway in America. The parkway is associated with the history of American parkways and New Deal recreation and conservation efforts. The parkway is further nationally significant as an exceptionally important work of design in the fields of landscape architecture and civil engineering. The period of national significance is 1933-1987.
