This property is the subject of a pending National Historic Landmark nomination. The January 2024 draft of the National Historic Landmark nomination for the Manenggon Concentration Camp will be considered by the Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) at its meeting on May 14-15, 2024. The Landmarks Committee will evaluate whether to advise the NPSAB to recommend that the Secretary of the Interior proceed with designation. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Manenggon Concentration Camp in Yona Municipality, Guam, documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for its strong association with the Japanese occupation of Guam during World War II and the wartime experiences of Indigenous Pacific Islanders. It is where the Japanese military incarcerated approximately half of the island’s 21,000 Indigenous CHamoru in the weeks before the July 1944 American recapture of the island. It embodies the deprivation, indignity, subjugation, and brutality endured by the CHamoru people during the Japanese occupation and holds symbolic meaning as a testament to CHamoru courage, strength, sacrifice, and triumph over adversity. The period of national significance is mid-July until July 31, 1944.
