This Historic Structure Report (HSR) was prepared for Cocker House located in Vicksburg National Military Park. The HSR documents the historical development, current conditions, and significance/integrity of the Coker House and recommends options for its treatment and use to meet the National Park Service’s management objectives. The HSR is divided into two sections. Part I: Developmental History documents the property’s historical background and context and its chronology of development and use, describes and assesses its physical conditions, and evaluates its significance and integrity. Part II: Treatment and Use reviews requirements for treatment, presents an ultimate treatment and use, including evaluating alternatives for treatment, and provides recommendations for treatment, including resilience to natural hazards. The Coker House is historically significant as one of the few surviving structures (albeit a reconstructed one) associated with the Battle of Champion Hill, the decisive battle of the Civil War’s Vicksburg campaign, and the last surviving structure on the battlefield proper. The Union’s victory at Champion Hill and subsequently in gaining control of Vicksburg and the Mississippi River is widely acknowledged by historians as a key turning point in the Civil War.
