This document is a National Historic Landmark nomination for Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, California. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Wayfarers Chapel documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4 for embodying the distinguishing characteristics of postwar organic ecclesiastical design. Designed by noted architect and landscape architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. (more commonly known as Lloyd Wright), the chapel is an exceptional and unique example of a postwar modern organic ecclesiastical complex with a significant designed landscape. Wayfarers Chapel meets Criterion Consideration 1 for properties owned by religious institutions or used for religious purposes either historically or currently due to this architectural and designed landscape significance. The period of significance of 1951 to 1965 encompasses the original development of the complex shown in Wright’s building and landscape plans.
