The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Montgomery County Jail and Sheriff's Office in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4 as an excellent example of a unique prison cell type - the rotary jail - that was invented as an economic alternative for the county jail system during the late nineteenth century. It possesses the only remaining operational rotary jail mechanism and is the earliest extant rotary jail in the US that combines the rotary jail and sheriff's residence in a single building. The period of national significance is 1882-1889.
