Coastal Ecosystem Evolution along Cape Cod National Seashore from Long Point to Race Point: Multi-tiered, Science-based Management of Natural Resources and Infrastructure

This project was initiated by the Cape Cod National Seashore to learn more about the processes associated with onshore and offshore sediment transport and the relationship between the two at Herring Cove Beach in particular and the area between Long Point and Race Point in general. At the time the project was developed there was a nearly annual undermining of the north parking lot due to erosion and the old cinderblock bathhouse has been moved landward due to similar erosion problems. The extent and consistency of erosion was not in keeping with the long-term rates of erosion that had been documented by the Massachusetts Shoreline Change Project. In addition, between November 2014 – April 2015 the area from Long Point to Race Point had been extensively impacted by hydraulic clamming. Due to this event, a small distance study was added to the project to better understand the impacts such events could have on the sediment transport in the area as well as the biological impacts on the ecosystem.
