Expanding upon the 1978-2016 Kentucky American Ginseng Monitoring Program, Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves, in partnership with Kentucky Department of Agriculture, is working to complete a statewide assessment of ginseng populations, corresponding habitats and ecological threats. Twenty-four (20%) of Kentucky counties are assessed each year to complete the statewide assessment in 5 years, currently on track to be completed in 2023. The current status of ginseng in Kentucky indicates that the populations are likely to persist, but have the possibility of not maintaining historical or current population sizes and viability due to ongoing threats. In 2022, two ginseng populations were surveyed in Edmonson County at Mammoth Cave National Park (MCNP), resulting in some of the highest quality ginseng populations recorded in Kentucky.
