A climate change vulnerability assessment which integrated issues across natural resources, cultural resources, and facility assets, was conducted between March and July 2022 for George Washington Birthplace National Monument (NM). This was a rapid assessment using existing data and expert knowledge to understand the general trends in vulnerability across three time frames – 2022, 2050, and 2100 – and the risks to the park’s resource management goals. Vulnerability is the degree to which a resource, asset or process is susceptible to adverse effects of climate change, including climate variability and extremes. Climate stressors used to assess vulnerability included sea level rise (SLR), storm surge, flooding, erosion rates, precipitation and temperature changes, drought and ground water levels. This assessment is a method to combine the three resource types (Natural, Cultural and Facilities) to seek areas of integration that could increase the depth of understanding of the issues and seek opportunities for timely and sufficient action. The assessment broadly covers all the resources in George Washington Birthplace NM.
