This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Rock Island Site II in Rock Island State Park in Door County, Wisconsin. The NHL nomination for Rock Island Site II documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 6. This exceptionally well-preserved, multi-component, stratified archeological site has extraordinary potential to yield important information on the ethnic identification of archeological remains; the westward migration of Native American groups in the late 1600s and early 1700s; and Native American and Euro-American interactions, subsistence practices, settlement systems, and demographics during this period. The site also has the capacity to address critical theoretical issues of cultural continuity and change. The period of national significance is circa 1630 to circa 1766.
