Long-term monitoring of coho salmon and steelhead during freshwater life stages in coastal Marin County: 2019 annual report

The San Francisco Bay Area Network of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program monitors populations of federally endangered coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and federally threatened steelhead (O. mykiss) in watersheds at Point Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and Muir Woods National Monument. This report provides a summary of observations made during the 2019 monitoring year, November 2018 through October 2019, along with historical monitoring data for the Olema Creek, Redwood Creek, and Pine Gulch Creek watersheds. Monitoring of multiple coho salmon life stages including winter adult escapement surveys, spring outmigrant smolt trapping, and summer juvenile basinwide and index reach surveys, inform park managers of both the current status and long-term trends of the species. Overall, there was little change in coho salmon spawning in Olema Creek when compared to the last time this cohort was observed. In Redwood Creek, the adult coho salmon population was augmented with hatchery reared adults, resulting in a substantial increase in coho salmon spawning for the cohort. No significant change was detected for coho smolt abundance in Olema Creek, while smolt abundance increased in Redwood Creek. Summer juvenile coho abundance in both Olema and Redwood Creeks was lower than anticipated. No coho were observed in Pine Gulch Creek through our monitoring efforts for the ninth consecutive year.
