Historic Structures Report for Five CPO Bungalows
Mason Architects. 2019. Historic Structures Report for Five CPO Bungalows. Historic Structure Report. National Park Service. Honolulu, HI
The CPO Bungalows are the last remaining houses that were constructed by the Navy as pre-WWII quarters built for Chief Petty Officers on Ford Island. The neighborhood began as six Bungalows in 1923 with an additional three added between 1928 and 1931. These houses, located on what would later be named Belleau Wood Loop, were 150 to 250 yards from the destruction along Battleship Row off Ford Island on December 7, 1941. Many surviving battleship sailors sought aid and shelter in these Chief Petty Officer homes. By 1937, two of the houses built in the 1930s (Facility 68 and 69) were relocated. In 1930, Facility 70 was constructed. In 1945, Facility 30 was moved to the North End Officer’s Housing neighborhood slightly toward the north, and by 1978 Facility 69 had been demolished. The original CPO houses stayed in continuous residential use until the 1990s when they were decommissioned. In 2016, Facility 28 was demolished and a new structure was built on its site. The Bungalows are contributing elements in the Pearl Harbor National Historic Landmark. In 2008, they were transferred from the US Navy to the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. In 2009, the NPS began stabilization efforts but they are still in poor condition and several are at risk of collapse. The information contained in this report will guide preservation, rehabilitation and/or restoration work to be undertaken on these structures to decrease the chance important historic fabric or features within these historic buildings will be lost or destroyed. This Historic Structures Report (HSR) also provides guidance for future planning, including developing priorities for program funding for the buildings’ protection.
