Automated recording devices are deployed in the field to record anuran vocalizations as part of the Protocol for Monitoring Vocal Anuran Communities in Southeast Coast Network Parks (Byrne et al. 2013). Up to 410 hours of audio recordings may be captured each year a park is sampled. This standard operating procedure (SOP) outlines a multi-tier and semi-automated approach to reviewing and classifying anuran calls captured in ARD recordings. Automated processes in program Kaleidoscope Pro 5 (Wildlife Acoustics, Inc. 2022) first identify and cluster most signal detections in recordings (i.e., anuran vocalizations plus additional natural and artificial sounds), and are followed by expert, manual review and classification of a subsample of detected signals. The results provide information on anuran community richness and species occupancy at each sampling location within parks.
