Coastal freshwater swamps along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast are threatened by changes in hydrology and salinity due to climate change, sea level rise and hydrologic alteration. Increasing salinity threatens the health of freshwater tree species, pushing these tidal freshwater swamps toward brackish, salt marsh and open water systems. For example, the most significant water quality issue in Big Thicket National Preserve (BITH) in Texas is related to declining freshwater supply.
