Moraine Park Campground is a historic designed landscape in Rocky Mountain National Park (ROMO, or park) in Larimer County, Colorado. The campground is east of the Continental Divide and near the eastern boundary of the park, approximately four miles west-southwest of the town of Estes Park. The inventory unit encompasses 121.0 acres, nearly all of which is dedicated to campsites and accompanying buildings and structures, such as comfort stations, an amphitheater, and a ranger station. Established in 1963–1967 on formerly private land that was acquired by the park as part of Mission 66 efforts, the campground was one of the last large-scale Mission 66 projects at the park and the largest campground in the park. Currently, it is one of five developed campgrounds in ROMO and remains the largest. Moraine Park Campground operates year-round with limited availability in the winter season, the only campground in the park to do so. The Cultural Landscapes Inventory (CLI) is a comprehensive inventory of all cultural landscapes in the National Park System. Landscapes that are listed, or eligible for listing, in the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources and in which the National Park Service has, or plans to acquire, legal interest are included in the inventory. This CLI examined the integrity of the Moraine Park Campground’s cultural landscape as it relates to its period of significance (1961–1967), which encompasses the years when Moraine Park Campground’s extant landscape was primarily designed and developed. This CLI recommends that the campground is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A for its associations with the Mission 66 Era, and under Criterion C for its Mission 66 era Naturalistic style landscape architecture and Park Service Modern architecture. Moraine Park Campground is classified as a component landscape of the parent Rocky Mountain National Park Landscape.
