On 16-17 July ‘24 mussel monitoring was conducted by the WVDNR on the New River. This was the fourth monitoring at this site with efforts occurring in 2008, 2014, and 2019. Monitoring was conducted utilizing three random start methodology excavating 96 0.25 m2 quadrates. Species observed were Actinonaias ligamentina and Cyclonaias tuberculata. Total mussel density was observed at 2.5 mussels/m2, the highest observed during monitoring, however the lack of recruitment remains a concern.
