The NHL nomination for Dudley Farm documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 5 for its exceptional ability to illustrate the history of owner-operated farms in the South in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The farm’s exceptionally well-preserved collection of buildings and outbuildings conveys broad national patterns in the social history, labor relations, racism, gender divisions of labor, and agricultural practices of owner-operated farms in the southeastern United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The period of national significance is 1881 to 1945.
