The Wheelbarrow (Keiper) Mine is located in San Bernardino County, California. The property is abandoned, although vestiges of mining structures, adits, rock walls, and other cultural materials associated with its history remain. The property encompasses 10.5 acres and consists of 18 historic-age resources, including three adits, three open stopes, two prospects, one stacked-stone building ruin, two structures related to the collapsed aerial tramway, and seven waste rock piles. The mining property is situated in rugged desert terrain among steep hillside inclines and washes within the Clark Mountain Range. Vegetation includes creosote, Mojave yucca, big galleta grass, blackbrush, brittlebush, banana yucca, and buckhorn cholla. The Wheelbarrow (Keiper) Mine property generally retains its integrity of location, setting, feeling, and association. However, it no longer retains its integrity of materials, workmanship, and design due to the significant deterioration of multiple structures relating to the mine’s function. Therefore, North Wind recommends the Wheelbarrow (Keiper) Mine Historic District as eligible for listing in the NRHP under Criteria A at the local level of significance for its association with the development of the mining industry in the east Mojave Desert; and under Criterion D for its information potential regarding mining in the Mojave Desert, and the lives of the miners who worked at the property.
