The National Park Service (NPS) will implement this vegetation management plan at Pecos NHP to restore, improve, and/or maintain ecological integrity, and to simultaneously preserve the historical setting of the site. Maintenance of the historical setting will largely focus on the visual aspects of the landscape that evoke a sense of place and reflect the settings of the Pecos Pueblo and associated 1600s-1800s Spanish Missions, the Civil War battle, and Forked Lightning Ranch, along with other events that occurred in the Upper Pecos Valley and Glorieta Pass. Preserving ecological integrity extends beyond these visible attributes to ensure that species composition and other ecological attributes are consistent with the soil types and native vegetation that would have likely occurred and are well-functioning parts of ecosystems. The vegetation management plan is also consistent with on-going Fire Management Plans and the preservation of cultural landscapes as outlined in the Historic Period Cultural Landscape Report.
