This property is the subject of a pending National Historic Landmark update. The September 2024 draft of the updated National Historic Landmark documentation for Fort Worden will be considered by the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) at its meeting on December 9-10, 2024. The NPSAB will evaluate whether to recommend that the Secretary of the Interior proceed with designation. The updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Jefferson County, Washington documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 as an outstanding example of the history, architecture, and engineering of coastal defense from the Endicott era through World War II. The period of national significance is 1898-1945.
