This property is the subject of a pending National Historic Landmark nomination/update. The October 2024 draft of the National Historic Landmark nomination for Summit Camp will be considered by the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) at its meeting on December 9-10, 2024. The NPSAB will evaluate whether to recommend that the Secretary of the Interior proceed with designation. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Summit Camp in Tahoe National Forest, Placer and Nevada Counties, California documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for association with the critical role of Chinese workers in the completion of the transcontinental railroad across the United States, and as a "type site" influencing the emergence of Chinese diaspora studies in the field of historical archaeology. The nomination also documents significance under NHL Criterion 6 for yielding and having the potential to yield new information about the lifeways of Chinese immigrant laborers in the 19th century. The periods of national significance are 1865-1869 and 1966-1969.
