The Thomas Stone NHS Landscape is the only cultural landscape identified at Thomas Stone National Historic Site. Established in 1978, the National Historic Site preserves and protects the resources of Thomas Stone’s plantation, known as Haberdeventure, and commemorates his service to the United States as a signer of the Declaration of Independence and member of the Continental Congress. The National Historic Site is located in Charles County, in southwestern Maryland, roughly 25 miles south of Washington, DC, and near the independent villages of Port Tobacco (roughly 1.5 miles south) and La Plata (roughly 3 miles east). The 328-acre National Historic Site is bounded on the east by Rose Hill Road, on the west by Hoghole Run, and on the north and south by low-density residential suburban development. The property represents the core area purchased by Thomas Stone in 1770 and used as his primary residence until he moved to Annapolis, Maryland, in 1783. A board plateau extends between Rose Hill Road and Hoghole Run with two drainages, Spring Branch and Eastern Drainage, flowing roughly west to the Run. The Main House, an irregular five-part Maryland manor-style house, is sited atop the plateau and surrounded by a patterning of agricultural fields, presently uncultivated and maintained as mixture of grasses and forbs. The Formal Garden Terraces extend south of the Main House and consist of three levels connected by earthen ramps aligned on center with the main block of the house. The Thomas Stone Burial Ground, containing nine burials of Stone family members, is situated on the southern edge a field roughly 300 feet from the Main House. A Tenant House and agricultural outbuildings, including a Horse Barn, Tobacco Barn, and Corn Crib, punctuate the landscape and are connected by drives and access roads. Contemporary additions to serve the property as a public park include a visitor center and parking area, maintenance buildings, recreational trails, and small-scale site furnishings.
