The NHL nomination for Chicano Park documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 5. As the site of a 1970 protest to secure a community park as promised by the local government, Chicano Park is nationally significant under NHL Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the cultural and political legacies of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement.
