This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Chicano Park in San Diego, California. The NHL nomination for Chicano Park documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 5. As the site of a 1970 protest to secure a community park as promised by the local government, Chicano Park is nationally significant under NHL Criterion 1 as an outstanding representation of the cultural and political legacies of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. The property is nationally significant under NHL Criterion 5 because the murals, which are significant works of public art, and the park itself collectively form a nationally significant entity. This property meets NHL Exception 8. The period of national significance is 1970-1989.
